Easter Hymn from Cavalleria rusticana

Bergen National Opera is delighted to present an Easter performance especially recorded along with Edvard Grieg Kor and singers who were part of our La Clemenza di Tito, which Covid19 forced us to cancel. We also welcome children from EGK´s talent programme.

Our soloist Elisabeth Teige is one of the most sought after young dramatic sopranos in Scandinavia. She sang a magnificent Senta for BNO in our The Flying Dutchman production in 2018. Elisabeth has also recently sung several major roles in Europe´s leading houses including Dresden and Berlin, and was due to make her Bayreuth Festival debut this summer. With Edvard Grieg Choir and EGK´s children´s choir, she sings the beautiful Easter hymn from the Mascagni´s opera Cavalleria Rusticana. EASTER HYMN At the centre of the story is an unhappy young woman, Santuzza, who feels that she is not worthy to attend the Easter mass as she has had an extramarital affair. The opera is based on a short story by Giovanni Verga. It is set in a Sicilian village in the 19th century, where a tense drama unfolds on Easter Sunday. The Easter Hymn is a tribute to the Lord, performed by the villagers and Santuzza.

“Let us sing hymns to Him, He is not dead! He is radiant; He has risen from the grave! We hail the risen Lord, today ascended to the glory of Heaven!”
