Just launched: Season program for 2017 / 2018

Bergen National Opera launches a season of surprising stories

In it´s 11th season, Bergen National Opera presents grand classics, new adventures on tour, celebrity recitals, a unique new project with young Norwegian composers and an exhilarating range of emotions!

On the main stage, productions include great Australian tenor Stuart Skelton, returning in the title role of Verdi´s Otello, along with American soprano Latonia Moore, whose Aida took Bergen by storm in 2014. Otello is directed and designed by Peter Mumford and conducted by BFO Chief, Edward Gardner.

Leading a fabulous full production of The Flying Dutchman, world-acclaimed Wagnerian bass-baritone Iain Paterson joins young Norwegian star Elisabeth Teige. Conducted by Eun Sung Kim, the opera is directed by the spectacular La Fura del Baus, in their BNO debut.

For our ten-venue tour of Hordaland and Rogaland, we´ve created a brand new dark and edgy Humperdinck Hans og Grete directed by James Bonas and featuring young star Norwegian singers. The opera will also have an integrated community project, with children taking part in the opera´s performances.

Our summer festival Mimi goes Glamping productions include a world premiere, The Paper Bag Princess from Robert Munsch´s original story. With top young Norwegian soloists and local singers, the opera will be re-created at Ulvsnesøy Prison, and Red Cross Nordic World College, Dale. Mimi Goes Glamping also features a brand new chamber production of Bizet´s Carmen with distinguished international guests.

3X3 : new operas by Norwegian composers

Collaborating with Borealis Festival, BNO has commissioned three young Norway-based composers to write 15-minute operas for three singers and small ensemble. Exciting young Amsterdam-based visual/performance artist Sjaron Minailo directs.

Opening Festspillene i Bergen, BNO and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra combine for a visually spectacular performance of Berlioz´s monumental Requiem – vast vocal and instrumental forces will be conducted by Edward Gardner, with tenor soloist Bror Magnus Tødenes.

With a new Håkonshallen recital series featuring stunning international voices, a full programme of events: Opera Pub, Gala evenings, talks and projects for children, BNO´s new season presents a startling mix: join our heroes, heroines, dramas and romances and enter a world of excitement.
